Keep it clean — help prevent foodborne illnesses at home

1214KeepItClean

We’re all busy this time of year. Whether you’re planning a party, shopping for holiday meals or preparing food, you should never be too busy to keep food safe.

It’s not just your hands that need to stay clean before, during and after preparing food. Cleaning and sanitizing appliances and utensils is essential to food safety.

Good cleaning and sanitation doesn’t just happen; you must plan and commit to it. Keep these food safety tips in mind when you’re preparing your meals this holiday season — or any time of the year.

  • Always wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds before and after handling food.
  • Rinse fruits and vegetables under running tap water to remove soil and help avoid spreading bacteria as you cut or peel them.
  • Clean cutting boards, knives and countertops frequently with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item.
  • Wash utensils and appliances thoroughly to extend their life. Damaged items can be harder to clean and provide areas for harmful bacteria to grow.
  • Plan ahead so you have time to properly clean dirty pots and pans. Don’t forget to clean the inside of your sink when you’re done washing dishes.
