Associates’ compassion goes beyond Publix’s doors

We often receive touching stories about Publix associates who have impacted the lives of customers. Our associates are known for their desire to serve, and those at #1317, Pensacola, Florida, are no exception.

0115MrLouWhen Lou — a customer known to associates as Mr. Lou — walked through the door, he made a big impression on everyone he encountered. He took the time to get to know the associates at #1317, and they took the time to get to know him. Each time he shopped, he brought candy and handed it out to his Publix family as he made his way through the store.

“Our goal is always to go above and beyond to make a positive difference in our customers’ shopping experiences. It’s a bonus when we encounter a customer who makes a difference in our lives — and Mr. Lou did just that,” said Store Manager Patrick Lascell. “His unwavering spirit was contagious. He told me that my associates made his day; he didn’t realize it was he who made ours.”

Sadly, Lou passed away in October. Nine associates from #1317 attended his funeral and graveside service and handed out candy to Lou’s family and friends in his memory.

Two of Mr. Lou’s family members contacted Publix to share how touched everyone in attendance was by this overwhelming act of kindness and respect. It’s recognition like this that lets us know we make a difference in our customers’ lives. And through those connections and lasting relationships, we perpetuate the culture Mr. George valued and expected of us all.
