On June 7, 1982, then-CEO Howard Jenkins announced some breaking news — Publix would introduce automated teller machines (ATMs) at 70 Publix stores in southeast Florida.
Today, millions of ATMs exist across the globe. But back then, ATMs were on the cutting edge of technology. Many people had to visit their banks to conduct basic financial transactions. Once installed, ATMs — or Publix tellers as we called them — allowed customers the opportunity to withdraw cash, make deposits and check balances as they did their grocery shopping.
Toward the end of 1982, seven financial institutions agreed to participate in Publix’s ATM program. And, on Nov. 18, 1982, Mr. George had the honor of performing the first transaction on a Publix teller at #164, Hollywood, Florida. Pictured to above is the ATM receipt he received that day.
So, the next time you use a Publix ATM, remember this piece of our history, and share the story with your family and friends!
