Since 2010, you’ve been working hard to support Publix’s strategy through My Publix, My Part. You’ve challenged yourself to go above and beyond in providing premier service, producing quality products, dynamically selling and much more. Many of you also have been rewarded with My Publix, My Part Recognition Program cards for executing your strategic tasks at a role model level. If you haven’t, keep trying — you can receive free products, and the pat on the back from your manger is nice, too!
As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of My Publix, My Part, take a look at this story that demonstrates how one associate is doing his part to keep his customers coming back.
Front Service Clerk Gus Peters, #696, Sarasota, Florida, is a guy everyone wants to know. Customers are drawn to his smile and outgoing personality, but most of all, they love the way he makes them feel.
“Gus has a way of making everyone feel special and important,” said Assistant Customer Service Manager Kim Lasota. “Sometimes, he’ll be gathering carts in the parking lot and someone will pass by and he’ll say, ‘Hey, I’ve got a Lamborghini for you,’ and he’ll hand them a cart. He just has a way with people.”
Recently, a visitor to Gus’ store was serenaded by this friendly former radio announcer, and the moment was recorded and posted on Publix’s Facebook page. At the time, no one knew the customer also was a Publix associate at another store.
“I was headed to the beach with my sister, and we decided to stop by the Publix Deli,” said Customer Service Manager Angela Gunter, #1357, Clermont, Florida. “Gus had no idea I worked at Publix, but he treated me like I was the most important person in the store — and I imagine he would do that for any customer. I was so elated by the experience that it made me want to be a better manager.”
For going above and beyond to treat his customers like royalty, Gus has received several My Publix, My Part recognition cards. He says he doesn’t do it for recognition, though — it’s just what he loves to do.
“I really enjoy people,” said Gus. “I serve premium customers at a premium supermarket, and every day is a good day here.”
