John Puccio — Director of Benefits

John Puccio

John joined Publix in 1986 as a front service clerk at #290, Cooper City, Florida, later transferring to #189 [now #680], Gainesville, Florida, while working his way through college. In 1993, John joined human resources. From there, he moved into group health benefits and in his current role is responsible for administering Publix’s benefits plans and associate wellness program.

Where were you born?
Teaneck, New Jersey

What did you want to be when you were little?
A Navy fighter pilot, but my need for contact lenses put a quick end to that.

What’s your work philosophy?
I like a quote from Mark Twain: “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

How has Publix influenced you?
Publix really showed me the importance of how employers should treat their people and their communities. This influence helped drive me to be much more active with local volunteer organizations, which I’ve found to be very rewarding personally.

What do you like doing in your spare time?
Restoring old cars, coaching youth soccer and mountain biking are at the top of my list.

What are your favorite Publix products?
Boar’s Head Jerk Turkey & Gouda Sub and Publix Deli Rotisserie Chicken. And when I fall off the “eat healthier” wagon, it’s Publix Premium Moose Tracks Ice Cream.

What hasn’t changed about Publix since you started?
Our core culture: a company that is dedicated to its associates and has the kind of company ownership we all enjoy. It’s both unique and special. Publix realizes that if an employer takes care of its associates, they in turn will take care of customers, and then customers will take care of our business. It amazes me more employers haven’t been able to figure this out!

What do you like best about your job?
It’s an unusual mix of harder business skills along with softer people skills.  The decisions we make every day can affect our business and our associates.  It’s challenging, but very rewarding.

What’s your favorite book?
I recently became hooked on the Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones) series by George R.R. Martin. I can’t wait for the sixth book to be published!

What’s playing in your iPod right now?
Anything from Metallica to The Black Keys to Dierks Bentley.
