See what this associate has cooking

Jeff Young

Growing up in a Publix family, Recipe Development Technician Jeff Young saw himself one day following in his family members’ footsteps. So it was no surprise when Jeff applied to #672, Marietta, Georgia — the same store where his mother worked — when he turned 16, and he was hired as a part-time grocery clerk.

But an appreciation for Publix wasn’t the only thing passed down in Jeff’s family; so was cooking.

“My grandmother and mother were both amazing cooks, and I learned a lot from both of them,” said Jeff. “But I didn’t really start to enjoy cooking until I took a food production class in high school.”

Jeff found his niche and decided to advance his skills in the kitchen by applying to culinary school. It wasn’t too long after he graduated that he was able to combine two things he really enjoyed — cooking and working for Publix.

“When the Simple Meals program rolled out to my store, my store manager knew of my experience and asked me if I was interested in becoming a meals clerk. And of course, I jumped at the chance,” said Jeff. “This opportunity was interesting to me and new to Publix. Plus, I could use the skills I learned in culinary school.”

Today, Jeff is on the other side of the Aprons kiosk helping the meals retail business unit develop recipes for Simple Meals, private label products and more, while never forgetting his experience in the stores.

“I always try to think from the meals clerks’ points of view when helping to develop recipes and meal plans,” said Jeff. “There are many things to consider when developing recipes like items featured in the weekly ad, seasonality of product and vendor participation, as well as being mindful of what works best for our associates and customers. It can be challenging yet rewarding and fun.”
