From the time he was a little boy, Wade Mansfield knew he was going to be a truck driver. In fact, it’s in his DNA. Wade’s father, Prescott, was a Publix truck driver, and he inspired Wade and his brother, James, to follow in his footsteps.

Wade started his Publix career in 1977 working on the rail dock in Miami, and he held several positions before he achieved his dream and became a truck driver in 1980.

“When I started, I thought I’d only drive for about 15 years,” said Wade. “Things were very different back then — we only had about 200 stores.”

Today, Wade is based in Jacksonville, Florida, and with more than 35 years of driving, he has quite a list of accomplishments. In 1985, he became the first Publix driver to represent Florida in the National Truck Driving Championship, and most recently, he celebrated 3 million miles of safe driving with Publix. But he can’t take all the credit for his success.

“Our mechanics take a lot of pride in their work and do an excellent job taking care of our trucks,” said Wade. “And, our fleet safety team teaches classes twice a year, so we’re up to date on the latest information, regulations and laws.”

It also doesn’t hurt that today’s Publix trucks are more comfortable, with cruise control and air-ride seats to make the job more enjoyable. There’s one more thing that’s helped Wade along the way, and it’s something all drivers can benefit from.

“My dad gave me great advice when I started driving: always be aware of your surroundings, use your mirrors, and drive with care and courtesy.”

Wade is one of five Publix truck drivers who have achieved 3 million miles of safe driving.
