Jeff Day - Director of Transportation and Maintenance

Jeff joined Publix in 1973 as a part-time selector in the Miami Distribution Center. After leaving the company for about a year, he was rehired in 1975 in the same job. He became a full-time associate in 1976 and was promoted to department foreman in 1979. Jeff was promoted to night shift produce department head in 1985, and then he transferred to the Deerfield Warehouse as Superintendent in 1992. He held many management positions before being promoted to his current role in corporate distribution in 2004.

Where were you born?
Miami

What did you want to be when you were little?
A marine biologist — I wanted to spend a lot of time around the ocean.

What brought you to Publix?
I took a summer job to help me earn enough money to go to college. Then I went to the University of Florida for a year and came back home, where I was rehired at the Miami Distribution Center and started my career.

The dictionary

What’s your favorite TV show?
Naked and Afraid — the human dynamics are incredible

What is your favorite movie?
The original “The Day the Earth Stood Still”

What do you enjoy most about working at Publix?
The value placed on our associates through Mr. George’s philosophies

What’s your work or life philosophy?
We’re all different in a variety of ways, yet we’re all the same in that we want safety and security for ourselves and our families. We want to grow and improve our lives. We should respect and appreciate our differences and help one another grow into whatever potential each of us possesses.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I like having an opportunity to help associates grow in their roles and be part of a team that is contributing positively to our company’s success.

What has changed most about Publix since you started here?
When I started in 1973, Publix was very successful, operating only in Florida. Today, we continue to be very successful, but in multiple states and in a multitude of markets.

How has Publix influenced you?
I’ve had the opportunity to work hard, grow and develop a career beyond what I thought possible. It’s been a rewarding experience.

What are your hobbies?
Kayaking, photography, gardening, and being in nature

How do you spend your spare time?
Trying to master the art of enjoying life’s simple pleasures, wherever we may find them

What music are you listening to right now?
Glass Animals, Imagine Dragons and American Authors

What’s your proudest moment?
I’ve been fortunate to have many events and accomplishments that I am proud of, both personally and professionally. One highlight would be receiving the “Highest Achievement Award for Leadership,” voted on by my peers in a Dale Carnegie leadership course.

What’s your favorite sports team?
I enjoy watching sports, but I don’t have a current team favorite. I’ve always admired the Miami Dolphins’ 17 – 0 undefeated season and the extraordinary way they accomplished it.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Deep dish pizza — My Pi [a Chicago-style pizza restaurant] is absolutely the best!
