Store Manager Joe Kerns, #1258, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, has made living Life. Inspired. a lifelong pursuit. Last spring, the Destin/South Walton edition of MVP Magazine featured him as one of “Fit at any age” residents. For Joe, being active isn’t just about himself, it’s also about being a good role model for his children and his associates.
“I always want to do my best, and I want to be better today than yesterday — both personally and professionally,” said Joe. “Being active and eating right helps me achieve that goal.”

Why did you choose a healthful lifestyle?
My parents passed away early — my dad when I was one and my mom when I was 12. I wanted to keep myself in good shape because I didn’t want that to happen to me. So, it’s something I’ve always been aware of — to keep physical activity an essential part of my lifestyle. As I got older, I felt it was time to amp it up for my wife and kids and make being active an even bigger part of our routine.
How do you live Life. Inspired.?
I work out 3 to 4 times per week. I do CrossFit, go mountain biking, and play softball and golf. I also choose not to eat fast food. Even with our hectic schedule, my family tries to come together at the table, and we focus on protein, vegetables — especially green, leafy vegetables — and fruits. I want to show my kids they can stay away from foods we know are bad for them and still enjoy a good meal.
What keeps you motivated?
I’m motivated to find success in anything I do. Whether that’s at work or at the gym, I want to see improvement.
How does staying active and eating right impact your work at Publix?
It helps tremendously! I’ve been a store manager for six years, and the longer I’m in leadership, the more I firmly believe that if you feel good, it yields good results. Being active keeps me grounded and going, and I’m a more effective leader with a clear mind.
How do you help others who might want to adopt a healthful lifestyle?
For me, it’s all about playing that supporting role and understanding people. Whether they want to change their diet or become more active, it’s my job to listen from a positive frame of mind and offer advice based on my life experience.
