Where were you born?

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What did you want to be when you were little?

Being from Pennsylvania, when I was little I grew up wanting to be a Penn State linebacker. The problem with that plan was that I stayed little.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the ability to influence other people. In particular, I really relish offering a kind word or compliment to make someone’s day. I do love my job, and I love talking to our associates.

What do you enjoy most about working at Publix?

I was in the military for 24 years. We had a team of individuals working for a common goal for the common good. It’s the same culture here — a team working for the good of the overall company.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I call them the three Ps: pickles, popcorn and pretzels.

What’s your favorite sports team?

The Philadelphia Eagles. I bleed green for two reasons — the Eagles and Publix.

What’s your favorite Publix product?

I would say I have an addiction to Publix Deli Unsweetened Tea, based on the volume I consume.

What’s your work philosophy?

I believe people in general — and certainly here — want to do a good job. It’s leadership’s role to help them succeed through the proper tools and training. When people know and understand where things are headed, they will do the right thing to make it a reality. I believe if people are happy, they’ll be successful at work.

What’s your proudest moment?

My graduation from the Naval Academy, retiring from the military as a Navy commander, and my children graduating from college were all proud moments. When I was offered the job as vice president, that was another proud moment.

What brought you to Publix?

The short answer is the recession. I was in the development business, and Publix was my principal customer. During the recession, no one was developing shopping centers. I knew Publix was the best of all retailers, and I really strived to be associated with the best. I had the opportunity to join, and I took advantage of it.

What is your favorite movie?

“Saving Private Ryan” is up there. It’s one of those movies that moves me every time I watch it.

What music are you listening to right now?

I normally listen to podcasts, the news and sports, but I’m consciously trying to listen to more music. If I’m listening to a song or playlist, it’s something like the Zac Brown Band or Kenny Chesney.

What are your hobbies?

I like to fish; in particular when I can, I like to fish from a kayak. And working out, but I don’t know if that’s a hobby or a necessity.
