While many think the arrows in the symbol stand for reduce, reuse and recycle, they actually symbolize the three steps to recycling materials and the continuous loop they create.

Step 1: Collecting and processing

Recycling can be picked up at the curb or dropped off at a collection site. The materials are then sent to a recovery facility, where they are sorted and processed.

Step 2: Manufacturing

The materials are then manufactured into a new product. Some common items made from recyclable materials include plastic beverage containers and aluminum cans. Even plastic lumber used for building playground equipment and park benches is made from recycled plastic bags and wraps.

Step 3: Purchasing new products made from recycled materials

The recycling loop closes when shoppers purchase new materials made from recycled materials. Look for products labeled as recycled, post-consumer content or recyclable product to keep the cycle going.
