Creating a store layout that works for customers, associates and department operations is no easy feat. That’s why Virtual Design Coordinator Jim Bayne works with a team of designers to produce a store’s potential layout, using building information modeling (BIM) technology.
Through 3D elements and virtual reality assistance, BIM technology allows Jim and his team to identify potential opportunities of a store layout and address them before a store is built or remodeled.
“We can use the technology to look at heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts, steel structure and piping,” said Jim. “It helps us make sure our systems aren’t running into each other.”
Jim and his team use software called Revit to view a store’s design in 3D. When Jim first joined his Publix team in 2008, Publix was still using 2D design software. With support from his department, Jim decided to learn the Revit platform. Soon, he was able to train members of his team.
“I knew there was a better way,” said Jim. “I watched videos about Revit at night, and then worked in the program during the day.”
Jim was the only one on his team who could use Revit in 2010; now, 22 team members are trained to use elements of the program. Two years ago, the team began work on the first Revit project for Publix: #1634, Cookeville, Tennessee.
“We want to help streamline the design and documentation process for Publix,” he said.
Vice President of Facilities Bob McGarrity said Jim’s advocacy for 3D design and technology has been an asset to Publix leaders. His desire to find efficiencies in his job and learn new technology is why he’s being recognized as a My Publix, My Part difference maker.
“Jim’s vision and commitment to this new way of store design has allowed us to create 3D models of our stores in intricate detail before we build them,” said Bob. “This has helped our store development be much more predictable.”
Jim said he learns to keep from feeling stagnant.
“It’s important to learn new things and see what’s coming next in the industry,” he said. “Our team is getting better every day at incorporating these new technologies.”
