It’s time to pick up the torch for Special Olympics athletes.
Since 1994, customers and associates have joined together to support Special Olympics through our annual Light the Torch register campaign. And it’s time to do it again. From Jan. 7 – 18, customers can add $1, $5, $10 or another amount of their choosing to their purchase at the register and receive coupons for savings on select products.
Last year, Publix raised more than $4.5 million to support over 245,000 Special Olympics athletes residing within our operating area. Special Olympics provides free year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual differences. Through these programs, Special Olympics athletes also develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of skills and friendship with their communities.

Front Service Clerk Zachary Vanderbeck, #1324, Tampa, Florida
On a daily basis, Zachary uses crutches to get around, but when he’s on his horse, Penny, he moves like the wind! Zachary and Penny have participated in the Special Olympics equestrian program for many years, winning several ribbons and awards for riding. As an associate, Zachary loves to work and, most of all, loves his customers!
Front Service Clerk David Trocano, #767, Port Richey, Florida
David has participated in the Special Olympics for 23 years. As a Special Olympian, he’s medaled in several competitions, including swimming, basketball, bowling and cycling. David loves serving his customers and helping out with the Light the Torch register campaign every year. When he’s not at work or training with the Special Olympics, David can be found reading his favorite DC and Marvel comics.
Front Service Clerk Ellis Allanson, #448, Winter Haven, Florida
As a Special Olympics athlete, Ellis has participated in bowling, paddleboard, basketball, and track and field competitions. He has won several medals as part of the summer, fall and winter Special Olympics games. Ellis loves to compete, but he loves Publix and his customers even more!
Front Service Clerk Jordan Johnson, #1321, St. Petersburg, Florida
Jordan has been described as a superstar! And not just as a Special Olympics athlete, where he’s won gold in the 400-meter walk and silver in shot put, but also for his servant’s heart. Jordan is quick to lend a helping hand to fellow associates and customers and is also the first to volunteer for Publix’s community events.
Front Service Clerk Wade Graves, #1132, Brooksville, Florida
Each year, Wade competes in several Special Olympics events, including swimming, basketball and equestrian competitions. He’s won gold and silver medals in these sports throughout the years. In addition to his athletic prowess, Wade teaches others with special needs how to care for and ride horses, volunteers with his church and during December collects gifts to give to underprivileged kids. Wade is always positive and loves coming to work!
