Building relationships shows how much you care

February is a month that focuses on caring for others.

When we think back on Mr. George’s lessons, they all have a component of caring, but I want to focus on one — Be There.

You may have heard about how Mr. George believed it was important to stay connected to the day-to-day operations of our company. But if you dig deeper into why being there is so important, it’s really about the example he set to connect with, listen to and learn from those around you, day in and day out.

The conversations Mr. George had with associates helped shape the future of Publix. They helped inspire innovation. Through open communication, Mr. George encouraged others to share their ideas. He valued their perspectives and understood how the diverse backgrounds of our associates contributed to the success of Publix.

So how do the lessons of the past help us focus on caring for others? We can take those key components and use them every day. Connecting with, listening to and learning from others is how you build relationships and show others you care about them. Take a moment to ask your co-workers about their backgrounds and experiences every opportunity you can. Listen with an open mind. Be active in the conversation. Don’t let distractions get in the way of being there.

This month, challenge yourself to do more — to listen to and learn more about those around you who you don’t know. You may even build a new relationship that will last a lifetime.

Thanks for all you do.
