Achieve better well-being with preventive care

The pandemic has caused many of us to get off track with our annual physicals and preventive screenings. Because of concerns about COVID-19, an estimated 32% of U.S. adults have delayed or avoided routine, preventive care. And some of us only think about going to the doctor when we aren’t feeling well. But did you know you should also see a doctor when you’re feeling just fine?

It’s true! Visiting your doctor for your annual physical and preventive screenings should be a vital part of your health care routine. Consider this statistic: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if U.S. adults followed a few common recommendations from their doctor, such as quitting tobacco, getting an annual flu shot and getting cancer screenings, 100,000 lives could be saved each year.

So, why is it important to get into a “screen routine”? An annual physical can help your doctor identify health concerns or detect illness at an early stage when treatment is likely to work best. During your visit, your doctor can advise you on lifestyle changes or address concerns you might have about maintaining your health. This visit also provides you with an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with your doctor and provide them with a better understanding of your background and any risk factors in case you do get sick.

The type and frequency of preventive screenings and immunizations depend on several factors, including your age, medical history and risk factors for certain diseases. But here are a few topics you should talk to your doctor or child’s pediatrician about:

For children and adolescents

  • Immunizations that can help protect against serious and possibly fatal diseases like chickenpox, measles, mumps and whooping cough
  • Screening for excess weight and obesity
  • Vision and hearing screenings

For adults

  • Immunizations and boosters that can help protect against serious illnesses and diseases like the flu, pneumonia, shingles and tetanus
  • Screenings for weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Screenings for diabetes and cancer

And to make annual physicals and preventive screenings even easier for you, many are covered under insurance plans with minimal or no out-of-pocket expense to you and your family. Publix BCBS PPO Plan enrollees enjoy free preventive care and common immunizations at Publix pharmacies.

So, don’t delay. Get into a “screen routine” and schedule your preventive care today!
