Lessons from our founder
Our founder Mr. George opened the first Publix Food Store in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1930. From that very first store, he knew if Publix took care of its associates, they in turn would take care of our customers. We keep his legacy alive by focusing on 6 of his core lessons.
We own it
When you work at Publix, you’re more than just an associate. You can become a company owner.
New to the Publix family? Learn the differences between our PROFIT Plan, 401(k) SMART Plan and Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP). These are the 3 ways you can become a company owner!
- PROFIT Plan: This plan is an employee stock ownership plan, which is a type of retirement plan that invests primarily in employer stock. Publix contributes its stock to the PROFIT Plan for the benefit of eligible associates.
Once you complete 1 year of employment with 1,000 work credit hours in your anniversary year (based on your hire date), you automatically become a participant in the PROFIT Plan. To share in Publix’s contribution of Publix stock each plan year, you must be a participant and reach 1,000 work credit hours during your anniversary year that ends in that plan year. The Publix board of directors approves the PROFIT Plan contribution each plan year.
Contributions are made at no cost to participants and are allocated to participants’ accounts based on eligible wages. Your eligible wages are generally the pay you receive from the date you become a participant in the PROFIT Plan through Dec. 31 of the plan year. If you’re a participant for the entire plan year, your eligible wages are generally the pay you receive from Jan. 1 – Dec. 31 for that plan year.
Want to see your PROFIT Plan account balance? Log in or create a confidential account on Publix Stockholder Online today.
- 401(k) SMART Plan: This plan allows you to contribute as much as 30% of your pay toward your retirement plan and invest your money among 12 investment fund options, including up to 25% in Publix stock.
Publix offers a matching contribution based on your savings in the SMART plan each year. For each dollar you save in the plan, up to 3% of your eligible pay, Publix contributes 50 cents to your account — up to a maximum of $750 per year. You’re eligible for the matching contribution for a plan year if you reach 1,000 work credit hours during your anniversary year that ends in that plan year. The Publix board of directors approves the SMART Plan matching contribution each plan year.
You can enroll by visiting the SMART plan website. Then, use the myOrangeMoney tool to see how your contributions can impact your retirement. In addition to contributions from your regular pay, you can also elect to contribute up to 30% of your holiday bonus to your SMART plan account. Visit the SMART plan page on PASSport for more information.
- ESPP: This plan allows you to directly purchase Publix stock during 4 offering periods per year. You can purchase stock in
- an individual account
- a joint account with your spouse or
- a custodial account for your minor child.
Green looks good on you
Part of the Publix mission is to be intolerant of waste. You can help us achieve that goal — and simplify your life — by going paperless for things like your tax forms and benefits documents.
If you’re a stockholder with an ESPP account, you can elect direct deposit of your stock dividends, exchange paper certificates for e-certificates and choose e-delivery of documents by heading to Publix Stockholder Online.
And you can also get your money faster when you sign up for direct deposit of your pay. This election also applies to Publix stock dividends paid to you on your PROFIT Plan account unless you elect an alternate dividend payment preference.
Expand your education
School can be back in session anytime with our tuition reimbursement program. Just ask some of your co-workers who have gone back to class!
We’re proud to offer enhanced tuition reimbursement opportunities to eligible associates obtaining their GED certificate, pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, enrolling in technical or occupational programs, or taking individual courses.
And that’s not all. We’re also proud to offer adult education resources to you, including access to resources for one-to-one tutoring, GED prep classes and conversational French or Spanish classes.
Check out these associates who are glad they did it, and you can be too! Visit PASSport today for more education options.
