Create proactive hurricane habits

Hurricane season began on June 1 and will run through the end of November. Since storms can be unpredictable, it’s important to have a plan in place long before a hurricane is headed your way.

According to early studies from Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project, the 2022 hurricane season is expected to be above average, with more than a dozen named storms. Here are some tips you and your loved ones can take today to prepare:

  • Power up. Don’t wait until a storm is only a few days away to find your flashlights and portable chargers. Stock up on things like batteries and matches that you’ll need if the power goes out.
  • Keep a paper trail. There are a lot of important papers in your life. Make digital copies of insurance documents and Social Security cards for your records, if you haven’t already. Be sure to keep paper documents in a safe, waterproof place to prevent water damage.
  • Update your insurance. If you’ve recently remodeled your home or simply can’t remember the last time you renewed your insurance policy, look at your policy and make updates where necessary. According to the Insurance Information Institute, you should review all policies at least once annually. Keep an eye out for your annual renewal reminder when your expiration date is approaching.
  • Stock your pantry. Avoid storm season crowds and buy your nonperishables early. Just add a few extra canned goods or bottled water to your weekly shopping list to have on hand in the event of a storm. If you realize you purchased too much once hurricane season is over, consider donating any unused nonperishables to your local food bank or another nonprofit in need.
  • Manage your medications. When you stock up on food and water, don’t forget your medications. Make sure you have enough to last through the duration of a storm and in the days after. And don’t forget to do the same for your kids and pets!
  • Hit the road. If necessary, have an evacuation route in place and share it with your friends and family. By proactively preparing, you put yourself in the best situation during hurricane season.
