Publix is helping conserve land and restore water to the Florida Everglades.
As a wetland ecosystem that spans 2 million acres across central and south Florida, the Florida Everglades plays an essential role in the availability of fresh water. The Everglades helps control flooding by absorbing excess water and can filter contaminants and impurities out of water before it reaches the aquifer, a natural underground structure that holds groundwater often used for drinking. The Florida Everglades provides drinking water for 8 million Floridians every day. It’s also home to a wide variety of plants and wildlife.
We are proud to continue supporting projects with the National Park Foundation and National Audubon Society to help restore fresh water in the Everglades.
Everglades National Park
We’ve teamed up with the National Park Foundation to restore approximately 500 acres by 2025 in the eastern Everglades through the removal of invasive, non-native plant species. The result of this work has restored an estimated 32 million gallons of water per year in the Everglades so far.
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Additionally, our work with the National Audubon Society on restoration projects in the western Everglades has resulted in the restoration of 500 acres to date at an estimated 102 million gallons of water restored per year.
