Learning has no limits, and with the help of Publix’s adult education opportunities, this associate is 1 step closer to making his career dreams a reality.

Deli Clerk John Carlos Tejada, #1447, Bradenton, Florida, discovered the General Education Development (GED) reimbursement benefit Publix offers after sharing his educational goals with a fellow associate.

“My co-worker told me about the program and how Publix helped him earn his GED certificate,” said John Carlos. “I had been considering earning it myself for a while, and this was the push I needed.”

Through this program, associates who take and pass their state’s GED exam may be reimbursed for exam registration, along with the cost of a GED workbook or a GED preparation class.

Inspired and eager to kick-start his future, John Carlos studied for the exam and received his GED certificate.

“I felt accomplished when I passed the test. It’s a day I’ll always remember,” he said. “I appreciate my Publix family for walking me through the process of taking the exam and making it easy for me to take off from work.”

After earning his GED certificate, John Carlos found applying for the reimbursement program easy.

“All I had to do was submit an application on PASSport and provide the required documents,” he said. “Once everything was approved, I received the reimbursement.”

Since benefiting from this program, John Carlos has been paying it forward by spreading the word to other associates. He was also recently promoted to a deli clerk after serving as a cashier.

“I’ve shared my story with my peers and told them how this program can help them now and lead to more opportunities in the future,” he said.

John Carlos plans to grow his career with Publix and become a department manager.
