What is your favorite lesson from Mr. George?
My favorite lesson is one I tell my team: Prepare for opportunity. The opportunities at Publix are everywhere. You just need to determine what you want to do and then go for it!
What’s your work philosophy?
My personal work philosophy has these 4 pillars: work hard, seek to understand, strive for excellence and do the right thing. These have always served me well, and I use them to make Publix a little better each day.
What’s your most memorable Publix experience?
Receiving the George W. Jenkins Award in 2014
Of all the places you’ve visited, what’s your favorite?
Hiking to waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains
How would you summarize working in the technology industry?
It’s an exciting, fast-paced, always-changing industry that can create so much value for our associates and customers.
When did you become interested in technology?
I always wanted to be in tech! I even wrote in my junior high school yearbook that I wanted to become a computer technologist.
Are you binge-watching anything?
My wife and I loved “Shogun!” I remember watching the original series years ago.
What are your go-to toppings on a Pub sub?
I always preorder an Ultimate Sub with lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, mayo, mustard, black olives and bell peppers.
What song always gets you in a good headspace?
If it’s 1st thing in the morning and I want to be hyped up for the day, it’s “Whatever It Takes” by Imagine Dragons. If I’m relaxing, I listen to the “Impressions de France” soundtrack from the France pavilion at Disney’s Epcot.
What was your favorite board/card game as a kid?
Monopoly
What’s a skill you want to learn?
I want to learn how to play a musical instrument, such as the piano or the cornet I still have that my great-grandfather played when he was in a band.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
After I graduated college, my store manager at the time encouraged me to apply to our technology team, and I’m so thankful I took his advice.
What makes Publix different from other companies?
It truly is a great place to work! Our culture, people, company ownership and, just like Mr. George said, the “smorgasbord” of opportunities.
What’s your dream car?
I grew up during the original “Magnum, P.I.” days, so I’ve always wanted a red Ferrari.
Is there a project you’ve helped roll out that still brings a smile to your face?
The 1st thing that comes to mind is the Automated Produce Procurement System (APPS), which helps produce buyers manage the buying of produce. It was manual before, but now it’s so easy as a digital process.
If you could meet anyone from the past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d want to meet Mr. George on Sept. 5, 1930 — the day before he opened the 1st Publix. I think it would be fascinating to see what it took to open that 1st store.
What skills do you think advanced your Publix career the most?
Interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with associates at all levels
