Offering customers more sustainable seafood options is a priority at Publix. By working with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), we’ve taken this a step further. We’re funding projects and programs that help find more sustainable options for seafood fisheries around the world.
One of the projects we’re supporting focuses on reducing bycatch, which is when unintended fish and wildlife get caught in fishing gear. Another of the project’s goals is to cut down on entanglement in fishing gear. This includes endangered species, such as the North Atlantic right whale. As whales travel through the ocean, they can get caught in fishing gear like that used to catch crab and lobster.
We are working with SFP to test, purchase and implement on-demand gear in the United States and Canadian crab and lobster fisheries. This innovative gear reduces the risk of entanglement by removing the rope and buoy system and instead using Bluetooth technology to locate and retrieve fishing gear.
We’re also focused on giving customers the information they need to make informed seafood-buying decisions. Customers can use our product labels and sustainability icons to learn more about the origin of the seafood they’re purchasing and whether it’s sustainably sourced.
