Two associates received the Carol Jenkins Barnett and Publix Community Service Scholarship, which provides $5,000 to support their educational journeys. Cashier Mackenzie Slack, #497, Palm Harbor, Florida
Mackenzie has been serving her community alongside her mom since she was 4. From beach cleanups to volunteering at her church, she has always enjoyed helping others.
In high school, she volunteered with FEAST Food Pantry, an organization that provides food and personal care items to families in need in the Palm Harbor community. Mackenzie started as a regular volunteer helping at events. She quickly became involved on the administrative side of the operation, where she helped coordinate volunteers and organize events.
In March 2025, FEAST Food Pantry moved to a new building, and Mackenzie helped them build shelves and write letters notifying the community of the new location.
Mackenzie is attending St. Leo University. She hasn’t declared her major yet, but she is interested in human resources and finding a career that makes a difference and helps people.
She also plays soccer and continues her community involvement through St. Leo’s University Ministry and the Office of Community Service.
“Being awarded this scholarship is such an honor,” said Mackenzie. “Doing things for other people makes me feel good. Being recognized for that is an indescribable feeling.”

Cashier Aleria Lester, #1573240, TallahasseeVero Beach, Florida
Aleria’s passion for community service began in high school when she got involved in student government. Every month, they would choose a different community service project, and Aleria fell in love with making a difference and helping others.
Throughout high school, one of Aleria’s favorite ways to give back was volunteering at Gifford Youth Achievement Center, where she served as a math tutor and helped kids with their homework.
“Being a recipient of the Carol Jenkins Barnett Scholarship means so much to me,” said Aleria. “It can get busy trying to stay on top of school, work and being involved in my community, but receiving this scholarship made me feel confident that I am making a difference.”
Aleria is attending Florida State University (FSU) and studying biomedical engineering. Her dream is to help develop prosthetics and medical devices for amputees.
FSU has many student volunteer programs, and Aleria is already getting involved with Engage Tallahassee, which pairs students with service projects across the local community.
About the Carol Jenkins Barnett and Publix Community Service Scholarship
This scholarship honors the life and philanthropic work of Carol Jenkins Barnett, former chair and president of Publix Super Markets Charities and daughter of our founder, Mr. George. She carried on her father’s legacy of community service and made a lasting impact on so many. She and her husband, Barney, generously supported United Way, Florida Partnership for School Readiness, Family Fundamentals and countless other organizations. She is remembered for her advocacy of children.
Each year, 2 active associates receive this award based on their community service activities. Associates must be in good standing as of the application deadline and when the scholarship is awarded, and be registered as full-time, 1st-year college or technical program students for the following fall academic semester.
