GOAT status: Publix in the 2010s

We’ve come a long way since the 1st Publix Food Store opened in Winter Haven, Florida, on Sept. 6, 1930. We’re now operating across 8 states and have become the largest employee-owned company in the U.S.

Leading up to our 95th anniversary in September, we’re looking back through the decades.

In the 2010s, Taylor Swift taught us how to “Shake It Off” with the hit single from her album “1989.” On the big screen, The Avengers assembled in New York City, and nothing was ever quite the same. “Hamilton” took over Broadway. Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Eleven took us upside down and helped take Netflix to new heights in the bingeable, global phenomenon “Stranger Things.” Instagram’s grid feed dominated social media in 2010, and in 2013, the concept of a “story” was introduced on Snapchat.

The ’10s saw Publix exploring new territory. We opened the Charlotte Division, started Publix Serves and launched grocery delivery, powered by Instacart.

2011: Publix created its 1st social media account.

On July 1, 2011, Publix went live on Facebook at 7 a.m. In 2013, Publix launched 2 official X accounts, @Publix and @PublixHelps.

2013: Publix in-store pickup launched.

Publix began rolling out in-store pickup on July 8, 2013. At the time, this service allowed customers to place online orders for Publix brand and Boar’s Head sliced meats, cheeses and Pub subs. Today, this service has expanded to include more products like platters and cakes.

2014: Publix entered North Carolina.

On Feb. 26, 2014, we opened #1442, Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was the 1st store to open in the newly created Charlotte Division.

2015: Publix Serves began as a single-day event.

Publix Serves started as a program to unite our associates in community service efforts to celebrate our 85th anniversary. On April 17, 2015, we held the 1st Publix Serves Day event. More than 4,000 associates volunteered at over 125 nonprofit organizations to help individuals and families in their communities.

2016: Grocery delivery, powered by Instacart, was launched.

Publix and Instacart joined together to bring same-day grocery delivery to our customers through delivery.publix.com in July 2016.

2017: Publix entered Virginia.

In February 2016, Publix announced it would enter its 7th state. The 1st store there opened at #1566, Glen Allen, Virginia, on July 15, 2017.

2017: Publix was named a Fortune Legend.

2017 was Publix’s 20th consecutive year being honored on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. We were recognized as one of the Great Place to Work Legends for making the list every year since its inception.

Lessons from our founder: Give back

Mr. George believed that for any organization to be successful, it must give back.

He was once asked, “How much do you think you’d be worth today if you hadn’t given away so much?” Mr. George answered without hesitation, “Probably nothing.”

He set the example by giving his time and talent to his communities. Publix Serves, our companywide community service campaign, is just one way we continue his legacy of giving back.
