Charlie Brown monitors, maintains and repairs the machines that keep temperatures low at our distribution and manufacturing facilities.
Refrigeration technicians play a crucial role in our industrial operations. They maintain refrigeration systems’ electrical and mechanical parts, so manufacturing facilities like dairy plants, fresh kitchens and produce warehouses stay cold. Techs repair or replace motors and coils when they go out and control units when they no longer function properly.
Charlie joined the industrial operations refrigeration team in 2014. Before becoming a Publix associate, he worked for a construction company as a welder and pipe fitter, building ammonia refrigeration systems. He now supports the same type of systems he built with his previous employer. “It’s nice to see the process from start to finish,” Charlie said.
He completes a daily list of preventative maintenance tasks to stay ahead of normal wear and tear. Charlie also makes daily rounds to visually inspect refrigeration units and verify temperatures and humidity levels to avoid potential problems.
When major issues arise, technicians from other locations often step in to help. In these situations, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with associates who are newer to the field.
“We have a great team,” said Charlie. “It makes a difference when we can all work together.”
Publix’s Industrial Maintenance Training Center, located in Lakeland, Florida, offers a variety of courses for associates seeking a career in maintenance or refrigeration. An introductory trainee program is available for those without experience to gain a solid foundation in maintaining industrial systems. The center also provides additional courses for current associates to work toward different competency levels. Charlie became a certified refrigeration Class A technician in 2019 through the training center.
