Store Manager Samir Tatarevic, #688, St. Petersburg, Florida, earned a Mr. George Gold Coin Award for his bravery and compassion.
What began as a typical Sunday morning for Samir and his son quickly became a lifesaving mission. While driving to his mother’s house, Samir noticed a dark cloud in the sky. Rolling down the window, he realized it was smoke coming from a nearby mobile home community.
Without hesitation, Samir followed the smoke and arrived at a home engulfed in flames. The visibly distressed homeowner stood outside with his dog. Samir learned the man’s wife was still inside and rushed in to help get her out.
As the fire spread to the neighboring house, Samir saw an older woman on the steps. She explained that her paralyzed grandson was inside, and she needed help getting him out.
Samir entered the burning home and found the 9-year-old boy just feet from the flames. He carefully carried the child out while on the phone with 911.
“It would have been easy to keep driving and assume help was coming,” said Samir. “But I’m glad I stopped. I was able to save 2 lives before the fire department got there.”
Samir was honored when his district manager presented him with a Mr. George Gold Coin Award.
“I want to live boldly and always put others first,” said Samir. “Being recognized means a lot, and I’m proud of that moment, especially because my son witnessed how powerful the decision to stop and help was.”
