What did you want to be when you were younger?
I wanted to be a zoologist like Marlin Perkins from the television program “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,” similar to the late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin.
How did you initially get involved in environmental and sustainability work?
I grew up in Homestead, Florida, exploring the Florida Keys and the Everglades, which sparked my love for the outdoors. To protect it, I earned degrees in environmental and chemical engineering from Florida Institute of Technology, followed by a master’s in environmental and occupational health and safety from the University of South Florida. I graduated in 1984, which aligned with major environmental legislation that created abundant initiatives to protect the planet.
What’s your favorite environmental and sustainability initiative at Publix?
On the environmental side, it’s our Environmental Management Programs, which gave me the opportunity to become part of the Publix family. Through restructuring and enhancements, we have achieved over $12.5 million in cost savings for Publix since 2016. On the sustainability side, I love our coral nursery installation in the Florida Keys, with the help of FORCE BLUE’s military veterans. It’s one of the projects funded through the Good Together environmental campaign. I was honored to be a part of the team that helped construct the coral trees used in the installation.

I will definitely be outdoors on the water or in the woods!
