Three associates raise the bar for safety and service excellence

In industrial operations, safety is not just a main focus; it is a highly valued differentiator that shapes Publix’s success.

From the moment our industrial operations associates are hired, they promise to uphold the highest safety standards. During onboarding, they make this promise: “As Publix associates, we value each other as the most important resource within our company. Our primary responsibility as owners is to treat each other with dignity and respect, which includes working safely for ourselves and others. To that end, I understand all work must be done safely. I promise to work safely, to encourage others to work safely and to address unsafe conditions.”

This month, we interviewed 3 industrial operations associates who were recognized as My Publix, My Part difference makers for prioritizing safety.

Trailer Movement Analyst Madeline Sinclair

Lakeland, Florida

Madeline was first hired as a cashier in 2006. After a career transition, she rejoined Publix in 2018 as a return center administrative assistant in the Lakeland Division. Her drive and expertise led to a promotion in 2022 to her current role. As a trailer movement analyst, Madeline supports all industrial operations by coordinating the placement of every Publix fleet trailer, which ensures timely store deliveries. She quickly directs vendors to the correct docks and staging areas, streamlining the loading and unloading process. Her dedication to her team and commitment to safety make her a true My Publix, My Part difference maker.

Why is safety something you prioritize and value?

I prioritize safety because it affects everyone. My goal is to ensure every associate goes home safely to their loved ones each day. I work hard to help others understand why safety matters, not just as a rule, but as a responsibility. I encourage questions and promote the use of aids, such as safety straps for trailer doors, seat belts and personal protective equipment. When people feel empowered to protect themselves and each other, we create a safer, stronger workplace.

Why do you think Publix is a great place to work?

This is a great place to work because of the way Publix truly cares for its people. I’m proud to work alongside associates who are passionate about delivering the best customer service, and who show up and give their best effort every single day. I always feel supported and inspired. Being recognized for consistently prioritizing safety doesn’t just feel like a pat on the back — it’s a powerful reminder that doing the right thing matters and that effort never goes unnoticed.

Why is teamwork important?

Teamwork is essential, especially during weather-related emergencies. In those times, multiple teams work together, including corporate transportation associates, return center analysts and industrial operations engineers. We coordinate closely with each other to ensure store locations have all the essentials for customers in need. The Publix culture makes collaboration not only effective but enjoyable. I truly value the opportunity to work with different teams and meet new people across the company.

Who or what inspires you to work hard?

My family does. I have 2 daughters, and I want to be a good example for them.

What advice would you give to a future Publix associate?

Starting something new can feel overwhelming, but don’t let that stop you. Every challenge is a chance to grow, and at Publix, you’re never alone. Your managers are here to guide and support you, and the rewards of learning and succeeding are well worth the effort.

Warehouse Lead Person Malachi Sorrells

Atlanta

Malachi began his Publix journey in 2022 as a warehouse selector trainee in the Atlanta Division’s low-velocity warehouse. Within just 3 months, he was promoted to warehouse selector. By 2023, Malachi advanced to his current role as warehouse lead, where he also serves as the dairy/box meat head coach. In this position, he plays a vital role in onboarding new trainees and overseeing departmental training. Malachi emphasizes the importance of safety with every new hire and champions a welcoming, confident and positive culture. His goal is to ensure that every associate feels excited to come to work and to work safely.

What is your work philosophy?

To wake up knowing it’s a privilege to work. If you start your day with that positive mindset, it’s easier to tackle the day, get things done and appreciate your career.

Can you tell me about a time when teamwork made a difference?

A few years ago, while working in low velocity, I was on the belt line upstairs during a particularly demanding shift. We had a large volume of product to move, and although our team usually wrapped up by 3 a.m., I stayed until 9 a.m. to ensure everything was shipped to our stores on time. That level of commitment played a big part in opening the door to my current leadership role.

It wasn’t difficult to go the extra mile because I was surrounded by a hardworking team that supported each other. Walking out that morning, I felt proud knowing I had done my job well and contributed to our success.

Why is it important to you to prioritize safety?

Safety is a top priority for me because I want every team member, including myself, to work confidently and effectively to deliver great results. I make it a point to check that equipment is operating correctly and that we actively work to reduce incidents. In my department, the cold environment adds extra risk. Spills or water on the floor can freeze and create ice, leading to slips and falls. Preventing these hazards takes a team effort, and when we all commit to working safely, we not only protect each other but also achieve the best results.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?

I’m proud of the way I helped transform the coaching process at the Atlanta distribution center. Over the past few years, our team has worked hard to build stronger connections and enhance communication among coaches. As a result, we now collaborate regularly, which has made a huge difference in training, safety and overall performance.

When one coach discovers a better method, we share it so everyone can apply the same approach. This is especially valuable during annual audits because we’re aligned and following best practices. Building that sense of connection and teamwork has been one of my most rewarding contributions.

What are your career goals with Publix?

My long-term goal is to become a department head. I’m inspired by the way my current department head leads —creating a positive and productive environment while supporting the team’s growth and prioritizing safety. His encouragement has given me confidence that I have what it takes to step into that role one day.

What advice would you give to a future Publix associate?

My advice would be to remember that your career isn’t limited to 1 position. Many people assume they’ll do the same thing forever, but Publix offers incredible opportunities for growth and advancement. If you’re not in your ideal role right now, focus on doing your best where you are, and take advantage of the chance to apply for other positions. If you show initiative and work hard, there’s so much you can achieve at Publix.

Cafeteria Supervisor Natalee Balford

Lakeland, Florida

Natalee joined Publix as a cook at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Her dedication and leadership quickly stood out, and she was promoted to cafeteria team leader in 2022. Two years later, she was promoted to her current role as a cafeteria supervisor. Natalee leads by example, inspiring her team through her passion for the job and unwavering commitment to safety — a responsibility she proudly upholds every day.

How do you prioritize safety?

Safety is a top priority for my team and me. Every morning, we start with a 10-minute debrief to keep it at the forefront. Some examples of the topics we review include proper cutting techniques, chemical handling protocols in the kitchen and precautions for machinery. While it may seem repetitive, this daily routine reinforces a culture of safety and ensures that everyone starts their day with the right mindset. Taking that extra step to protect our associates is always a win in my book.

What makes you successful at work?

My team. Teamwork is so important in the kitchen. Every associate plays a critical role, and no matter the task, each contributes directly to Publix’s success.

How would you describe your leadership style?

My leadership style is deeply shaped by my upbringing and Jamaican heritage. My family always taught me that nothing worth working for in life will be handed to you. You have to work hard and stay focused to achieve great things. I also lived in a multigenerational household with my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all under 1 roof. That experience taught me the value of collaboration, respect and looking out for one another.

I bring that same mindset to work. I often tell my team, “For the next 8 hours, we’re a family.” We support one another, protect each other and ensure everyone goes home safely. I also lead by example — whether it’s lending a hand when someone needs help or staying late to clean up and prepare for the next day, I do it with pride and a smile. I believe that when your team sees you working hard for them, they’re inspired to do the same for each other.

What does being recognized as a My Publix, My Part difference maker mean to you?

It makes me very proud. There was a time when I doubted my ability to lead because of my accent. I was worried no one would understand me. But I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection, effort and heart. I’m proud of the team I work with every day. We listen to one another, support each other and work hard to deliver premier customer service while keeping safety a top priority. This recognition reminds me that when you lead with authenticity and care, you truly make a difference.
