June is National Internet Safety Month — a time to raise awareness of online risks and promote safe internet habits. Since this observance was 1st designated in 2005, smartphones and social media have become more integrated into our daily lives. And with increased usage come increased hazards. Here are 4 simple steps to protect yourself and others and stay safe online.
Use strong passwords
You should always create unique, strong passwords. A strong password is at least 16 characters long, random, and unique for each account. Using the same password across multiple accounts increases risk if one of your accounts is compromised. To make remembering your passwords a breeze, you can use a password manager to generate, store and automatically fill in strong passwords.
Set up extra security to verify your identity
Many websites and accounts offer an extra layer of security beyond a password. This may include a fingerprint, a code from an authenticator app or a verification code sent to your phone. Some popular mobile devices even allow you to use facial recognition to verify your identity. Whenever it’s available, you should use extra security measures to protect yourself, especially for email, social media and financial accounts.
Keep software updated
Updating your software can help keep your personal devices safe from hackers and malware. When devices, apps or programs notify you that updates are available, you should install them as soon as possible. To make this seamless, set your personal devices to update automatically to keep yourself protected.
Recognize and report phishing
Phishing messages are designed to trick people into downloading malicious software or sharing personal information. Common warning signs of phishing include messages that create a sense of urgency, sound alarming or seem too good to be true. Never click on suspicious messages or links, or give any of your personal information to anyone. Instead, report phishing emails if your personal email provider supports this, and then delete them.
