Hurricane season is here, and it’s time to prepare for potential storms.
Prestorm preparations
- Create an evacuation plan.
- Keep nonperishable foods on hand in case you lose power.
- A good guideline to follow is 3 days of nonperishable food for each person.
- You should also have 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days.
- Have a first-aid kit.
If a storm is coming
- Fill your car or truck’s gas tank in case you need to evacuate.
- Have enough prescription medications on hand for at least a few weeks.
- Unplug electrical equipment, such as radios, televisions and small appliances. Leave freezers and refrigerators plugged in unless there is a risk of flooding.
- Store important documents in a safe, waterproof container.
- Secure anything in your yard that can be blown away by the wind.
- Put sandbags at any low-lying entranceways to help prevent indoor flooding.
- Barricade windows and doors with sheets of wood or heavy metal braces.
- Never leave pets behind if you must evacuate. Have an emergency plan that includes food and water for your pets.
Poststorm recovery
After the storm, be careful driving. Look for any dangling electrical wires, downed trees and/or fallen limbs.
If your water supply becomes contaminated, use your stored water for cooking and drinking until the health department says the water is safe. Before using tap water, bring it to a rolling boil for 1 minute, if needed.
When using a generator after a hurricane, never operate it indoors, in a garage, or anywhere near open windows, doors or vents.
