Meet an associate helping Publix choose store locations

Since joining Publix in 2018, Real Estate Specialist Shelby Fountain has built a career grounded in hard work and a passion for supporting Publix’s long-term growth.

With a father who was a store manager for 25 years, Shelby always felt a connection to the company. After graduating from college with a degree in finance, she got hired as a development management assistant.

Supporting development managers over her first 2 years gave her a strong foundation in processes, planning and the broader world of real estate development. Those experiences helped Shelby prepare for her current role, which she has held for 6 years.

As part of the team that selects sites for new Publix stores, Shelby’s work directly shapes the company’s future.

“Every day is different,” she explained. “One day I may be in the office analyzing data and maps or negotiating a real estate deal, and the next day I could be traveling through the Jacksonville Division — the area I support — evaluating growing communities to help target our next store location.”

Each opportunity Shelby presents to leadership is backed by data and field research, financial analysis and a focus on customer convenience.

“The skills most important in my role are analytical thinking, adaptability and curiosity about the interactions between people and their grocery store locations,” she said.

For associates interested in real estate, Shelby recommends starting in entry-level assistant positions within the department, roles that provide exposure to site selection, leasing, development and more.

This early experience often sparks a deeper appreciation for the work ahead.

“Seeing a location go from a rough concept to a fully operational Publix store is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “It’s when all the planning, research and collaboration finally come together to create something meaningful — new career opportunities for our associates and added convenience for the communities we serve.”
