Spring-clean for safer summer cookouts

The weather is heating up, and summer cookouts are on the horizon. Before you fill your coolers or fire up the grill, take time to clean all your cookout essentials to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination and foodborne illness.

Gear up the grill

Grills and grilling tools can sometimes get pushed to the side during the winter months, which makes spring the perfect time for a thorough cleaning.

Remove leftover food debris and grease buildup from grill grates, drip pans and interiors before the 1st cookout of the season. Don’t forget about utensils like tongs, spatulas and grill brushes, which should be washed and rinsed before use.

Well-maintained equipment reduces the chance of old residue contaminating fresh foods and helps food cook evenly.

Inspect your cutting boards

Cutting boards are heavily used during grilling season, especially when preparing raw meats, seafood, produce and ready-to-eat foods. Over time, boards can develop grooves, cracks or splintering that make them difficult to clean and can harbor bacteria.

Inspect cutting boards and replace any that are worn or damaged. When grilling, remember to use separate, clean cutting boards for raw and ready-to-eat foods to prevent cross-contamination.

Toast to spring-cleaning

Large punch bowls and beverage dispensers — often reserved for special occasions — are easy to overlook during routine cleaning. Pay extra attention to dispenser spouts, lids and hard-to-reach areas where residue and moisture can build up.

Before using these items for your summer cookout, wash them thoroughly and let them air-dry completely. Proper cleaning helps ensure beverages stay fresh and safe for your guests.

Keep it chill

Coolers and ice chests are essential for summer socials, but they can quickly become sources of contamination if not cleaned properly. Empty coolers completely, wash the interior and exterior surfaces and allow them to dry before storing or refilling.

It’s important to clean coolers after each use, especially if raw meat was stored inside.

Fresh start for summer

Spring-cleaning isn’t just about appearances — it’s an important step in food safety. By deep cleaning grilling equipment and properly washing cookout essentials, you can protect your guests and enjoy summer cookouts with confidence.
