With hearts for service and big dreams, 2 associates are beginning college this fall as recipients of the Carol Jenkins Barnett and Publix Community Service Scholarship. Both students were awarded $5,000 to support their educational journeys and recognize their dedication to giving back and leading positive change in their communities.

Charlotte Division
Cashier Zaniah McDowell, #1521, Gastonia, North Carolina
Zaniah’s passion for giving back was shaped early by the strength and example of the woman who raised her. Growing up with a single mom who found support through the Boys & Girls Club, Zaniah witnessed firsthand how compassion and community can change a life. Those experiences stayed with her and inspired her to become that same source of encouragement for others.
From joining Girl Scouts at age 7 to earning the organization’s highest honor, the Gold Award, Zaniah has consistently looked for ways to lift up those around her, especially the elderly and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Alongside her service, Zaniah has grown her Publix career in the Charlotte Division. She started as a front service clerk and now works as a cashier, finding the same sense of care, belonging and purpose at Publix that she values in her community.
This fall, Zaniah will attend Spelman College in Atlanta, where she plans to study political science on a pre-law track, with hopes of becoming an advocate for people without a voice. She also plans to continue her Publix journey by transferring to a store near campus.
“Winning this scholarship means so much more than recognition,” said Zaniah. “It reminds me of where I started, the community that supported me along the way and why giving back has always mattered so deeply to me.”
Miami Division
Front Service Clerk Catalina Valdes, #1657, Miami
For Catalina, giving back is something she actively pursues with purpose. Her commitment to community service began in middle school through her involvement with the National Junior Honor Society, where she participated in food drives and service projects. That early involvement inspired her to create her own community organization, Love Thy Neighbor.
Through Love Thy Neighbor, Catalina organizes donation drives and assembles care packages that are distributed by police officers and social workers to individuals in need. She also delivers care packages to hospitals and helps coordinate seasonal and holiday events throughout the year. From food and supply drives to community celebrations, Catalina enjoys creating moments of care and connection for others.
Alongside her community involvement, Catalina continues to make an impact as an associate in the Miami Division. She is grateful for the support and flexibility of her managers, who allow her to pursue meaningful service opportunities — a reflection of Publix’s belief in giving back to the communities we serve. By sharing her schedule and upcoming commitments in advance, Catalina can balance her role at Publix with her passion for community service.
This fall, Catalina will attend Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she plans to major in interior design with a minor in historic preservation. She intends to continue working for Publix when she is home during school breaks.
“I am incredibly grateful to be recognized for something I care so deeply about,” said Catalina. “This scholarship inspires me to continue leading with heart and making a difference through even the smallest acts of kindness.”
About the Carol Jenkins Barnett and Publix Community Service Scholarship
This scholarship honors the life and philanthropic work of Carol Jenkins Barnett, former chair and president of Publix Super Markets Charities and daughter of our founder, Mr. George. She carried on her father’s legacy of community service and made a lasting impact on so many. She and her husband, Barney, generously supported United Way, Florida Partnership for School Readiness, Family Fundamentals and countless other organizations. She is remembered for her advocacy for children.
Each year, 2 active associates receive this award for their community service. Associates must be in good standing as of the application deadline and when the scholarship is awarded, and be registered as full-time, 1st-year college or technical program students for the following fall academic semester.
