Back-to-basics safety tips

When life gets busy, it’s easy to skip the basics. Before you lift a heavy bin, climb a ladder or go searching in a cluttered garage, take a moment to reset. Try these simple, at-home safety reminders — and reflect on how the same habits could help at work, too.

I can almost reach it …

Whether it’s changing an air filter, grabbing storage bins, hanging decorations or cleaning shelves, when you’re tempted to stretch just a little farther, grab the right ladder or step stool instead. Two easy reminders: Wear slip-resistant shoes and keep both feet firmly planted. A few extra seconds can beat a close call.

It’s not that heavy …

Loading the car, moving a cooler, hauling groceries or rearranging furniture are everyday tasks you do without thinking. But before you tackle any of these, take a moment to plan your path and clear any tripping hazards. Don’t be shy about asking for help and remember — no twisting while carrying. Your back will thank you later.

I’ve got my hands full …

It happens to us all. We notice backpacks and shoes by the door, laundry piles in the middle of the room, a garage project in the wrong place or pet toys scattered on the floor. Before carrying anything, clear your pathway and keep your view unobstructed. One easy rule of thumb: Don’t carry a pile of items that’s higher than your line of vision.

I’ll do it later …

To-do lists never end, but safety deserves a spot at the top. Check batteries, keep flashlights and a first-aid kit handy, and make sure you have an emergency plan in place — especially during storm season. A quick readiness check now can save a lot of scrambling later.

I think I’ll cut out one step …

Whether you’re tackling a home project or managing a full calendar, remember: Being busy doesn’t mean cutting corners. Embracing simple safety habits helps make sure you finish what you’re doing feeling good — and ready to take on the next task.
