Meet Immunizing Pharmacy Technician Scott Lam

Scott, #1802, Clarksville, Tennessee, shares how trying something new can open the door to unexpected opportunities.

What was your journey to becoming a pharmacy technician?

Publix was the first job I had. I started out as a customer service clerk. My manager asked if I’d be interested in helping out in the pharmacy as a clerk, and I decided to give it a try. Once I cross-trained and became a registered pharmacy technician, I realized how much I really enjoyed helping people. I continued building my skills, and within about 6 months, I became an immunizing pharmacy technician.

Who’s been the most helpful to you in your career at Publix and why?

My managers have always wanted to see me improve. They have pointed me toward a career path, while encouraging me to be fulfilled in whatever I do.

What do you love most about working for Publix?

I love that we provide a warm and welcoming environment. I wanted to work for Publix because of how I was treated as a customer.

If you were not a pharmacy technician, what would you be?

I think I may have stayed with customer service and worked my way up.

Who inspires you?

My mom came from another country to have a better life. I saw her work really hard and make sacrifices. I can never repay her. Also, my team makes the work enjoyable and fulfilling.

What keeps you going every day?

I love my job, and I have a strong work ethic. I also love being physically active. That keeps me going.

What are your hobbies?

I like to go to the gym and cook.

What is your personal motto?

Perseverance. Even when things seem tough, you’ll find your way through.

Do you have a favorite quote by Mr. George?

Publix will be a little better, or not quite as good, because of you.

Do you have a favorite Publix product?

Chicken tender sub with bacon and cheese

What advice do you have for anyone interested in pursuing a career as a pharmacy technician?

It’s a lot of hard work, and you need to be detail-oriented and attentive. That being said, I would recommend Publix to anyone who wants to succeed and grow as a pharmacy technician.
