This month, Publix News spoke with Cashier Arielle McFarlane, #458, Oviedo, Fla., who is receiving her five-year service award this year. She’s a senior studying psychology at the University of Central Florida and a customer favorite at her store.
Publix News (PN): What brought you to Publix?
Arielle: I have a big Publix family, so working here seemed like a natural choice for me. I understood the benefits and everything good that comes along with the job, and I knew I wanted to work here.
PN: How do you balance working and going to school full time?
Arielle: It’s tough. I have to stay very organized. I want to get my master’s degree as well and continue working at Publix, so I have to stay focused and make the best use of my time.
PN: Do you feel like Publix is more than just a job?
Arielle: I feel like it’s my life. Even when I’m around my family or friends I’ll bring up something that happened at work. It flows over into everything I do. I love my job and my Publix family.
PN: What has Publix taught you in the last five years?
Arielle: It’s taught me a lot. I used to be really shy before I started working at Publix. Now I can talk to anyone about anything. It’s taught me to care a lot about other people and how to be organized (and it’s important to leave notes if your manager isn’t around!).
PN: What advice do you have for new associates?
Arielle: I’ve noticed a lot of new associates are quiet. I want them to break out of their shells. They’ll enjoy their jobs more; their customers and co-workers will love them, and Publix will be a happier place for them.

PN: What has made you stay for five years?
Arielle: I love the fact that I don’t have to worry about losing my job. I am fortunate to know Publix will be here for me and my family as long as I’m here.
PN: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Arielle: I love that it’s always different. I love the challenge of the fast-paced environment. I love my customers, my co-workers and my managers.
PN: How do you feel about receiving your five-year service award?
Arielle: It feels crazy! I remember getting hired, and it seems like yesterday. It doesn’t feel like it’s been five years. But, when you love your job, I guess it just flies by.
