From the green routine signs, stickers and sustainable practices we have in place to our annual Go Green contest, reusable bags and sustainability website, we have the tools to conserve resources at Publix and home.
Energy conservation — what a bright idea!
Saving energy is one step we can all take to reduce waste at work and home. Over the years, we’ve worked to help our stores consume less energy. Many lights in the frozen food cases, walk-in coolers and freezers have been replaced by energy efficient LED lights. We’ve also been able to adjust our refrigeration and air conditioning set points without compromising food quality or the comfort of our customers.
Even the little things make a big impact
We could save even more energy by doing a few simple things every day. In retail, it’s important to turn off all cooler and freezer lights when you’re not using them and keep the doors shut. When the lights are on and the doors are open, it costs Publix up to 55 cents per minute.
And there are things support associates can do to help, too! Make sure doors close behind you when you’re entering or exiting the building; turn off your computer and task lights when you leave for the day, and always report maintenance issues immediately.
But don’t stop there!
Conserve energy and save on your electric bill at home by purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, replacing incandescent light bulbs with LED or other energy efficient bulbs, and sealing air leaks around doors and windows. If each American family replaced one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, it would be enough to
- light 3 million homes for one year
- save almost $700 million in annual energy costs and
- prevent 4.5 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
