Having food on the table can make a lasting difference

According to Feeding America, hunger affects 35 million people in the U.S., including 10 million children and 5 million seniors. And as a result of the pandemic, an additional 17 million Americans may face hunger.

As a food retailer, we’re in a position to help make a difference, and Publix and Publix Super Markets Charities (PSMC) are working together on the issue of hunger.

Our efforts to help alleviate hunger include:

  • Perishable recovery and bakery donations — Our efforts include donating much-needed wholesome, but unsalable, foods to local food banks. Over the last decade we have donated over $2 billion in food, and we’ve committed to donating another $2 billion in food by 2029.
  • Financial support through our register campaigns and a new program — Since 2009, our register campaigns that support alleviating hunger have resulted in almost $96 million worth of food donations. Our farmers and families initiative, where we donated over 18 million pounds of produce in 2020, inspired us to launch a new program that you’ll hear more about in the coming weeks.
  • Publix Charities financial support — Over the past six years, PSMC has donated over $27 million to Feeding America member food banks and other nonprofit organizations to help alleviate hunger. Just last year, PSMC contributed a total of $5 million toward these efforts.

As you can see, we are committed to finding ways to help feed our neighbors and improve their lives. Having food on the table is a basic, essential need, and together we can make a lasting difference in our communities.

Thanks for all you do.
