Sustainability has been a priority at Publix since Mr. George founded the company. In fact, we like to say we were green before it was cool to be.

Each day associates work to support our five sustainability pillars by taking actions like the following:

• Water stewardship — smart irrigation systems in our retail landscaping and supporting restoration of the Florida Everglades.
• Landfill diversion — our recycling program for bags and foams.
• Energy conservation — automated lighting in our freezer cases.
• Plastics and packaging — recyclable packaging for GreenWise chicken.
• Responsible sourcing — working with the Ocean Disclosure Project and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to support seafood sustainability.

But that’s not all we do. Many of you joined me during Publix Serves Week — when we focused our efforts on projects that improved the environment. And if you weren’t able to formally participate, I encourage you to look for ways to make a difference in your community. Let’s do good together.
