Associate has a passion for fruit and ensuring we supply the best

This produce buyer enjoys working with farmers and being a “flavor advocate” for our customers.

JR began his Publix career in 2001 as a produce clerk. He worked his way up to become a retail improvement specialist, where he trained and mentored produce managers. But JR knew his goal was to be a buyer. In 2017, he became one.

JR buys “soft” fruit — everything from grapes and cherries to peaches and plums. He spends time traveling to farms to understand the growing process, see the result and build relationships with our suppliers or potential suppliers.

“We’re very loyal and committed to our suppliers,” said JR. “But we’re also looking for the next farmer who is putting the time in and growing an exceptional product.”

To ensure the best product goes on our shelves, JR is focused on quality and keeps himself up to date on industry trends.

“Everything I do is to ensure that our customers receive the freshest, best-tasting, top-of-the-line products. It is very important to me that we are flavor advocates for our consumers,” said JR. “We have a lot of input at the farm level, like which varieties are grown and how they are grown. We make sure Publix gets the best of the bunch.”
