Associate leverages past experience for department success

Deli Manager Jay Fish, #1659, Lakeland, Florida, is passionate about food and service.

After years in the hospitality industry, Jay started his career with Publix as a part-time deli clerk in 2019. He worked his way up through the deli before being promoted to his current position.

“Having been in restaurant and hotel management, I was ready for something new,” said Jay. “I am obsessed with food and creating special experiences for customers. Publix allowed me to transfer my skill sets to a new setting.”

Some of Jay’s previous training comes in handy in the fast-paced deli environment.

“You have to multitask, move quickly and think even faster,” said Jay. “I am usually thinking about a few things while actively working on something else.”

Being a deli manager means not only being responsible for the operation and performance results of the department, but also being accountable for customer satisfaction and associate development. While Jay is enthusiastic about our deli products and customer service, he is most passionate about the people on his team.

“I take pride in training my associates and exceeding their expectations. It is rewarding to see them become confident in their skills and dedicated to their jobs,” Jay said.

Jay believes that Publix is a great place to work because associates can gain knowledge and evolve in diverse roles.

“You always have an opportunity to learn at Publix,” said Jay, “whether it is about your current job or the next job you want.”
