Associate’s leadership earns him a gold coin award

Meat Manager Brett Wheeler, #778, Port Charlotte, Florida, proves that great leaders empower associates to succeed.

One day, Brett noticed a new associate, Meat Cutter Alex McLarty, riding an electric scooter to work. Curious, Brett asked a few questions and discovered that Alex rode more than 4 miles each way because he didn’t have his driver’s license.

Rather than letting the conversation end there, Brett saw an opportunity to help.

“I realized I could offer guidance and support,” said Brett. “Even small conversations can make a big difference in someone’s life.”

He encouraged Alex to take the permit test at the DMV and even shared tips on how to study — like using online practice tests.

That simple act of care sparked a chain of positive changes for Alex, who earned his license and is now able to drive his mom to and from doctor appointments. For his efforts to support Alex, Brett received the prestigious Mr. George Gold Coin Award.

“I was shocked,” said Brett. “I never expected recognition because I would do this for anyone. But I’m honored.”

For him, leadership means investing in people. Brett regularly checks in with his associates, gets to know them on a personal level, discusses career goals, explains company benefits and even shares advice.

His story shows that leadership is about empowering others, offering support and nurturing growth through genuine relationships.

“The amazing associates and relationships here are what make Publix special,” said Brett. “There’s no greater feeling than mentoring an associate and watching them succeed.”

The Mr. George Gold Coin Award is given to associates who embrace the Publix culture and provide premier service the way Mr. George himself would have. Receiving a gold coin means you’ve made a real difference in the lives of others by going above and beyond. Associates can become eligible for a gold coin by receiving praise from customers and associates through customer care and social media, which reviews each submission based on established criteria and guidelines. To recommend an associate for consideration, email the story details to goldcoin@publix.com.
