Cutting up with creativity

Since opening the original GreenWise Market in Hyde Park, Florida, in 2008, Cheese Specialist William Sloan, #1721, Tampa, Florida, has seen what potential lies in every creation.

William, who goes by Sloan, has been in several roles in both the deli and prepared foods departments, and knows the expectations both Publix and Publix GreenWise Market (PGWM) have.

“Customers come in and trust you to supply them with quality products and service,” said Sloan. “And while we do that, we also have the freedom to create displays that draw people in and get them interested in new products they’ve never tried.”

Sloan leans on his experience as an artist to create some fun and unique charcuterie boards for his customers.

“It’s all about using your design skills to put together a board bit by bit until it is overflowing with yummy treats,” said Sloan. “The other aspect of a good board is finding what pairs well with different products.”

But charcuterie boards at PGWM aren’t your grandmother’s cheddar cheese and cracker plates.

“We have so many different variations of cheese to learn,” said Sloan. “But I’ve gotten to try most of them and learn what complements them so I can make suggestions to customers.”

And interacting with customers comes easily to Sloan, who has been a stand-up comedian for 15 years.

“I love making people laugh! It’s something that comes naturally for me,” said Sloan. “I love traveling around the country to do shows and see new places.”

But being a comedian hasn’t just helped him collect bumper stickers for his car.

“At PGWM we have an environment where I get to be creative and have fun,” said Sloan. “Being a comedian helps me interact with our customers and create special connections that I wouldn’t have at other jobs.”
