As Memorial Day weekend approaches and many people plan their barbecues and beach days, it’s important to remember the meaning of this holiday. On Memorial Day, we recognize and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country. Here are some ways you can pay tribute to our fallen soldiers.
- Attend a Memorial Day event. Most towns have their own Memorial Day ceremony, parade or event. You can pay your respects and thank veterans for their service.
- Volunteer or donate to veterans’ charities. A good way to honor our fallen troops is to get involved with local charities to help veterans in need. In the name of those we lost, you can help support veterans by donating time or money. These organizations benefit veterans returning home with long-lasting physical or mental impacts, and grieving families of fallen soldiers.
- Take part in the National Moment of Remembrance. This simple gesture encourages Americans to observe a moment of silence for soldiers who have lost their lives in military service. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, take 1 minute to remember and thank the fallen.
- Put flowers or flags on soldiers’ graves. In the past, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. Since the Civil War, Americans would visit cemeteries and lay flowers at the graves of soldiers on the holiday. The tradition has continued over the years, even after the holiday became known as Memorial Day. You can join in the occasion by visiting your local cemetery and placing flowers or flags on soldiers’ graves.
The fun-in-the-sun activities are wonderful ways to spend the weekend. But don’t forget to take some time to remember those who are responsible for the freedoms we have today.
