Mr. George Gold Coin Award recipient and Pharmacy Manager Lana Dunn, #1741, The Villages, Florida, wanted to be a pharmacist since she was a child. She has worked for Publix for 10 years.
Why did you want to become a pharmacist?
When I was about 7 years old, I remember taking medication and then feeling better. I wanted to help others in this way. Around that time, I also saw a woman working in a local pharmacy, which showed me that this career path was possible. I never deviated from my goal of becoming a pharmacist.
What keeps you going every day?
Having a positive attitude truly makes a difference. Taking care of myself physically, mentally and spiritually is my foundation for a positive attitude.
If you were not a pharmacist, what would you be?
I felt a calling to become a teacher even when I was in pharmacy school. If I hadn’t been accepted into the pharmacy program, I would have pursued a career in special education.
Who inspires you?
My Granny Green was an honest, loving and spiritual woman who took life on her own terms. She lived on her farm until she was 90. The simplicity yet fullness of her life inspires me.
What are your hobbies?
Getting together with my large family. I also love running and yoga, so I became a certified yoga instructor.
What is your personal motto?
Amor fati. It’s Latin for “love of fate.” It means embracing all life experiences, both positive and negative, as good.
