Pouring out his love for wine

Grocery Replenishment Specialist JD Conley, #1676, Mountain Brook, Alabama, uses his love for wine to make an impact at Publix GreenWise Market (PGWM).

Born near Boston and raised in the South, JD always embraced his French culture passed down from his mom. He was raised to view wine as part of his heritage.

“My mom taught me early on why wine is so important to French people and families,” JD said. “Wine is not just a beverage for the French; it’s a way to celebrate every day with friends and family.”

Five years ago, JD ran his own marketing firm, but he wasn’t satisfied. So, he listened to a suggestion from his wife.

“She said I should work at Publix because I’ve always looked up to the brand,” explained JD. “I loved the Publix story because it was about Mr. George’s legacy and treating others with respect.”

After starting off as a grocery clerk, JD held various positions in the grocery department before he saw an opportunity to make the jump to PGWM and his dream job.

“I saw the opening for a wine specialist (now grocery replenishment specialist) and begged everyone who would listen to me,” JD said.

His sommelier test was delayed several times due to the pandemic, but in May 2022 he passed and became a certified wine sommelier. In the future, JD hopes to travel around our operating area, educating managers across the company about wine.

“I want to share my knowledge with our associates, so they too can help our customers find the perfect addition to their dinner table,” said JD.

He understands how wine can be used to develop connections with customers and ultimately form strong relationships with them.

“Customers develop relationships with you because you are knowledgeable and want to provide them with the best food experience,” JD said. “Publix is a company that likes to give back to our communities and earn the customers’ loyalty.”

Looking back on his journey to becoming a sommelier, JD is proud of how far he’s come.

“This is all a dream come true,” beamed JD. “I’m 53 now, and I know I want to be a ‘lifer’ at Publix.”
