Before she led teams at Publix, Sarah Nguyen led military units across Florida as a logistics specialist in the National Guard, training, coaching and preparing them for deployment.
Sarah’s leadership journey began during her military service and continues to guide her work in retail.
She began her Publix career in 2015 as a part-time cashier in Jacksonville, Florida. Today, Sarah is the store manager at #1883, Suffolk, Virginia, bringing the same focus, discipline and passion that defined her time in the National Guard.
“In the military, it didn’t matter who you were; we worked together toward one goal,” said Sarah. “It’s a different mission but the same mindset at Publix. We work together to provide premier service to customers.”
Whether coaching associates or helping on the sales floor, Sarah is intentional and leads by example.
“Retail is different every day. And when challenges arise, I often go back to my military training to stay calm under pressure, be a steady voice and get in the trenches with my team,” she explained.
Sarah also champions an inclusive workplace, especially for fellow veterans and military families. Publix supported both her and her husband through their deployments, giving them the opportunity to grow their careers while continuing to honor their service.
“I want other associates to know it’s possible to have a successful career at Publix while being in the military and long after your service is complete,” she said.
Each Veterans Day, Sarah takes a moment to reflect on her experience in the National Guard. “It was the most challenging and rewarding time of my life,” she said. “It shaped how I lead, how I connect with others and how I show up every day.”
