Small gestures, big impact

Creating a welcoming environment starts with a genuine connection. That’s something Cashier Tonya Isaac, #1470, Mint Hill, North Carolina, brings to life every day with positive energy and thoughtful interactions.

Tonya, who was born deaf, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2006 to build a better life for her 3 children. She joined Publix in 2019 as a part-time deli clerk at #1453, Charlotte, where her dedication and vibrant spirit quickly made a lasting impression.

“My 1st manager — now District Manager — Bobby Davis, went above and beyond to support me by learning sign language and using the Notes app to communicate,” she shared.

At her current store, leaders provide closed-captioning and customized training materials. During fundraising campaigns, they create cards she can show customers to encourage donations. Tonya plays a key role in making each campaign successful due to her efforts and friendly nature.

She uses expressive hand gestures to guide customers through transactions. People enjoy going through her line, especially to receive her warm goodbyes. It’s not uncommon to see her getting hugs from regulars who appreciate her kindness.

“Tonya has an amazing personality,” said Store Manager Jenn Wise. “She brings joy to our store every day.”

Tonya believes that to be included is to be understood, respected and supported. Her experience at Publix is a testament to that belief, showing that when associates feel included, they are empowered to thrive.
