Blueberries and blackberries and raspberries — oh my!

Whether you enjoy them fresh from the field or mixed in bakery goodies, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are at their very best this time of year. And because we buy a majority of these berries from within our operating area, they arrive in our stores at peak condition within days of being picked.

Not only do blueberries, blackberries and raspberries taste good, they’re good for you. They’re full of vitamin C, which may increase immunity and reduce your risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. And, because of their significant water content, they’re a good snack choice if you’re watching your weight.

It’s best to enjoy berries soon after purchasing them. Store unrinsed berries in the refrigerator — wait until right before serving to rinse and drain them — and allow them to come to room temperature for fullest flavor. Handle them gently, as they are delicate and bruise easily.

Have a berry bash

Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are found in more places than the produce department. This month, the bakery is featuring sweet treats like blueberry muffins, blueberry pie and Chantilly cake.

And on June 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Publix will host a storewide Berry Bash special event. This is your chance to taste a sample of the season with berry-inspired items, including Publix Bakery Raspberry Bliss Bar Cake, Publix Deli Blackberry Lemonade, Publix Premium Vanilla Ice Cream with Blackberry Patch Ice Cream Topping and — of course — At Season’s Peak blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Don’t forget to stop by the Aprons Simple Meals kiosk to try Raspberry Blue Cheese Crostini and Smoothie.
