New Year’s resolutions may seem like a great way to kick your tobacco habit, but why wait? You can enjoy the benefits of a smoke-free lifestyle today. All you need to do is decide to quit. Now. Right now. This very minute.
Let’s face it; it’s not that easy. If it was, lots of people would quit tobacco and never turn back. Here are a few tips to help you be successful at kicking the habit.
- Tell everyone. That’s right. Tell everyone you know the date you’re going to quit and ask for their support and encouragement. It also makes you more accountable for reaching your goal.
- Use Publix resources. If you’re enrolled in the BCBS PPO Plan, you have access to our Tobacco Cessation Program, which includes Chantix at the generic copay and a free GETQUIT support plan. We also have links to free state quit lines on www.publix.org > Life. Inspired. Program.
- Create a plan for weak moments. What will you do when your cravings kick in? How will you talk yourself out of one more cigarette or dip? Think about how you’ll stay motivated and committed to your goal.
- Add up the money. Figure out how much you spend on tobacco products every month, and then think of what you could put that money toward. Use that as motivation when you’re feeling weak.
- Forgive yourself. You’re going to have a bad day, and you might even give in to temptation. That’s OK. Forgive yourself and recommit to your goal again. Remember, one stumble doesn’t mean you fall to the ground.
