Always prepared for the eye of the storm

Jorge Martinez

Since 2001, Forklift Operator Jorge Martinez has experienced firsthand the wrath of tropical storms and hurricanes while working in various positions at the Miami distribution center. But 2005 and 2016 are years he will not forget. The most unforgettable storms he recalls are Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2005 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Memories of those storms remind Jorge of the importance to prepare and follow emergency procedures as soon as a storm’s path is announced. His team makes sure our trucks are loaded earlier than the regular schedule and arrive at the stores with products to serve our customers in preparation for the storm.

“We fill the trucks with essential items like water, canned goods, peanut butter, jelly, cereal and pet food,” said Jorge. “We work earlier than usual shifts to make sure all our stores are properly stocked and our associates are out in time to get home to their families.”

So when do they take care of securing their personal property? The team rotates shifts, so everyone has a chance to prepare for the storm. During the storm and with the use of a small, battery-operated TV and radio, he monitors the latest news and the track of the storm. He also calls the Publix Emergency InfoLine frequently to find out if his facility’s operating hours have changed.

“Publix has the best procedures in place for severe weather conditions, and we always make sure we can serve our stores and customers while maintaining our associates’ safety,” said Miami Warehouse Operations Manager Bruce Burwell.

In this edition, you will find great information on what to do before, during and after a storm.
